Rococo - 1700-1770s

The Rococo era was defined by seemingly contrasting aspects: extravagance and a quest for simplicity, light colors and heavy materials, aristocrats and the bourgeoisie.
French Rococo painting in general was characterized by easygoing, lighthearted treatments of mythological and courtship themes, rich and delicate brushwork, a relatively light tonal key, and sensuous colouring.

Early Neoclassical - 1780s-1790s

Neoclassicism in painting generally took the form of an emphasis on austere linear design in the depiction of Classical themes and subject matter, using archaeologically correct settings and clothing. It is an aesthetic attitude based on the art of Greece and Rome in antiquity, which invokes harmony, clarity, restraint, universality, and idealism.
In fashion, grew chemise à la reine, a loose white gown with a colorful silk sash around the waist. This was considered shocking for women at first, as the natural figure was apparent. However, women seized upon this style, using it as a symbol of their increased liberation.

19th Century Neoclassical/Regency - 1900s-1920s

Neoclassicism took inspiration from classical antiquity. For women, the high-waisted silhouette in lightweight muslin was the dominant style, while fashionable men looked to the tailors of Britain for a new, refined look.

Early Romantic - 1830s

Romantic art focused on emotions, feelings, and moods of all kinds including spirituality, imagination, mystery, and fervor. The subject matter varied widely including landscapes, religion, revolution, and peaceful beauty.
Historicism pervaded 1830s fashion, especially interpretations of the seventeenth century in the wide collars, puffed sleeves, and curled hairstyles

Early Victorian - 1840-1860s

The 1840s were the last years of the Romantic Era, but the old style had developed into a drooping, subdued style more associated with the Gothic Revival.
The silhouette of the 1840s consisted of a long-waisted bodice, tight, narrow sleeves, and a full, dome-shaped skirt that now skimmed the floor.

Late Victorian - 1870-1890s

The trend of skirts changed in the 1870s, with the focus of clothing concentrated at the back, as skirts projected backwards and fell flat against the body in the front. The great, circular or oval crinolines of previous decades collapsed into the so-called first bustle style.

Edwardian - 1900-1910s

The design trends of the Edwardian era revolved around the S curve when corsets created an S-shaped female silhouette, a change from the Victorian hourglass figure. The S bend corset forced the hips back and bust forward. The ideal female figure was a mature woman with a pigeon shaped monobosom.
Dresses were made of muslin, in natural colours (mostly white), adorned by laces and ribbons.
